Last night I dreamed I played for the Red Wings, and my sister Renee' did too. She was the captain. In the dream, no one seemed to think it strange that there were (at least) 2 women on the team. We were just part of the team. We were playing in the finals against the Kings (premonition to the days when Det will be in the East?) and we won game 1. I was convinced we were going to win in 6- We were in LA and I wanted to win at home. *dunno why it wouldn't be 4 games..?* I was very clearly visualizing the dogpile on top of Captain 'Nee when we would win. It was pretty awesome actually.
Then the dream shifted, and I was in the audience for a game.. I think it was an Oilers game in Edmonton with my friend Mindy. We had decided to take a trip (why Edmonton? No clue.) That went on for a minute, then I'm walking down the street.. somewhere.. wearing my Sabres jersey.
I dunno where ANY of that came from.
I just read Bob Probert's (Tough Guy) and then Theo Fleury's (Playing with Fire)
autobiographies. They were both really good and really intense. Wow.
Hockey on the brain?
So why haven't I been writing more or watching more games?

*It feels like 1994 again. 'Sup rookie Red Wing goalie?
*PUT OSGOOD IN NET! You know that Ossie has had a crappy regular season but he (and the rest of the old man Wings) knows how to turn it on for the playoffs.
*I hate San Jose. Especially Joe Thornton. YICK.

Yick. Sid and Geno scored goals tonight? Grr. Guess Pittsburgh wants to make this a series afterall. oh well, if they win tonight, we are guaranteed at least 6 games and more hockey is really never a bad thing, ya know?
Wow Babcock looks PISSED. I just turned the game on late in the 3rd so I haven't seen much of anything. For some reason I just wasn't that into watching the game tonight. We had rehearsal for my new play (the one that I co-wrote!) so that was cool, plus there's been a boy on my mind lately so hockey (even though it's the Wings, a team I love) has been pushed to the wayside a little bit.
I missed it yesterday but I do have a hockey SAB for you fine folks tonight. The idea came from a comment that Frostee made over in her blog. Enjoy. See y'all for game 5.

whinge
Oh whine whine whine the boards at the Joe are lively. It's not like it's a new arena.. you have played there before Pittsburgh (and apparently turned down a chance for an extra practice Friday). That's why it's called home ice advantage.
The first Wings goal was a bit lucky, it kinda sneaked past Fleury. The first Penguins goal was a little fluky too- Osgood played the puck but it didn't bounce off his stick like he thought it would and he couldn't recover. Great heads-up play by the Fedotenko to put it in. Such is hockey.
The second Wings goal was just putting it on the net and seeing what happens. One of the oldest rules in hockey- put the puck on the net. The boards had nothing to do with it as the puck bounced of a flailing Fleury. And as for the third goal, that was some sick hand-eye coordination by Abdelkader, and you can't take anything away from him for that.
So quit yer bitchin, Pens and go play game 2.
Also, I'll say that the Wings may have gotten lucky when Zetterberg covered the puck that was on Ozzie's back- I don't think anyone could tell if he had closed his hand on it or not (it would have been a penalty shot if he had)- and I doubt the ref even knew where it was. However, the Penguins got a bit lucky when Helm had that breakaway- Gill should had gotten a hooking or slashing penalty when he chopped at Helm but the refs turned a blind eye and Detroit didn't bitch. Gill definitely interfered with Helm's shot and possibly prevented a goal, but I don't think it was legal. It's a moot point but if you look at the game, the refs were letting things slide a bit.
Osgood was amazing, especially on the Malkin breakaway and Sid's little spin-o-rama- he had some help from Rafalski there too. Ozzie owns. :O)
I love the Wings. They are so unbelievably poised and calm. I really noticed it in the later parts of the Chicago series, when the 'hawks were running around their own zone, but it was still in evidence against the Pens. They look unshakable and it's really neat to see hockey played with such precision. (not something we saw much of in Buffalo LOL) That's not to say that the Red Wings don't make mistakes, but they don't get flustered easily and that makes a world of difference.
GO Red Wings! I say they win it in 5.

breaking news
I am actually a little sad that the Blackhawks lost today.. which puts them on the brink of elimination.
I think this means that, while I do love the Wings, I'm more of a 'Hawks fan than I was fully willing to admit.
This will require much thought but my brain is full right now with some hometown wanderings and too much nostalgia so I can't really process that at the moment.
and I am so sick of Pittsburgh. Carolina, I hate you guys too but will you get it together so I don't have to see the Pens anymore? GRRR.

razor sharp
Oh wow. What a crazy game. The Wings were down 0-3, scored 3 in about 4 minutes to tie it, then the 'Hawks won in OT.
*Phew* A few thoughts on tonight's tilt:
-WHY did Kronwall get ejected? I really don't think that was a dirty hit. Havlat had his head down and was off balance. It didn't help that he had 2 guys dropped on him after he was down either. I dunno, I just didn't think that was fair but that's me.
-Helloooo Sharpie. :) I liked the 2 interviews- after the 1st period and after his GAME WINNER in OT! Word. So my sis calls me during the first intermission, and she says.. "Oh I saw Patrick Sharp being interviewed. Now I understand why you're always drooling over him." LOL TOLD YA! ;)
-What exactly happened to Khabi? I guess he was sick or something.. I didn't quite get the story, and in true VS. style, they babble forever yet tell you NOTHING! Weird. I thought Huet did a nice job weathering the storm in the 3rd though. good job, buddy.
-Pahlsson's pass to Sharp for the game winner was SICK. To thread a pass though a couple of guys to the guy who just happens to be streaking towards the net (which was crazy cuz Sharp was practically behind the net when he sent the puck back that started the sequence which resulted in Pahlsson's pass but still. Crazy madness and sweet passing. Well done dude.
-I still love the Wings and I loved the way they calmly executed the comeback, but I'm totally excited that the Blackhawks won tonight because it will extend the series and that can only be a good thing. :)
-I'm in Ohio visiting my parents this weekend and I was telling them about the "Detroit Sucks" chant that they do in Chicago which I find hilarious. (for those of you unfamiliar, in lieu of a "Let's go Hawks" cheer, the fans instead say "Detroit Sucks") The also were amused by this.
-Oh and anyone who watched Hockey Central after the game heard this but Detroit is 0-93 in playoff games in which they have trailed by 3 or more goals. 0-93. WOW.
And on that note, I'm outta here. Can't wait till Sunday.

I'm sorry but I have to laugh when it's Soupy Campbell who had the giveaway that lead to the Red Wings OT goal tonight. Well done boss. I never liked Soupy that much, he was alright when he was on, but when he was off he was horrid and I was so tired of him when he finally left that it was just good riddance at that point.
Much as I've been flirting with the Blackhawks this post-season, I do still love the \Red Wings and I'm happy that they are winning. But I need more Blackhawks wins so that this series can continue. I can't wait till they are in Chicago.
I did enjoy the commercial with Burrish wanting to change traditions and taking out the Octopus.. that was pretty cool.
Eventually I'll get around to doing a post about how annoyed I am that the NHL awards are going to be in (gag) Vegas this year but it won't be tonight. I do have===ome things to say about that though..
No hockey tomorrow? What is up with that? it should be every other day. lame! But nooo I could be watching hockey tomorrow night but noooo.. oh well. Guess that's it for now.

I love me some playoff beards, and beards for a good cause is awesome. And I just pledged Sharpie's beard for $25 to Chicago charities. How cool is that?! GO VOTE FOR YOUR FAVORITE beard and donate some money to a good cause! :):)

Let the games begin
I missed both game 1s as I'm playing Mom to the nephews for a few days, but I will try to catch tomorrow's game- I need to see my main men and decide once and for all who I am cheering for in that series. I think it's the Wings but man those Blackhawks are tempting. But I've been a Red Wings fan for 15 years and you can't just throw that away.
And I need to see the energy of that series- I love the rivalry between Detroit and Chicago, it's amazing. Guys, I was AT the Winter Classic this year and the place was electric. And my Blackhawks friends say that games against Detroit were always like that. I wish the Sabres had a rival that we get that fired up about. I guess the closest would be maybe Toronto, because of proximity but really there is nothing like the atmosphere of a Wings/Blackhawks game. There are plenty of teams that the Sabres don't like but few that we actually get crazy about hating, ya know?
I think I've figured out what it is about the 'Hawks that is so appealing. (Besides the obvious Sharp factor LOL) They are what the Sabres wish they were. They are young, speedy, tough and talented, without any HUGE name players but a lot of pretty decent guys that work really well together. True they have Kane and Toews, who are a pretty hot duo, and Kaner was a #1 pick, but still most of their guys are players who quietly go out and get the job done. The Sabres want to be like that. The Sabres used to be (almost but not quite) like that and they want it back. And maybe that's why I like the Blackhawks so much, because they are plucky. I think I've used that word before to describe them, but it fits. They play exciting hockey and I love exciting hockey. You don't have to score 129386 goals a night to play exciting hockey, you just have to play with passion and persistence and I will love you forever. Speed, foxy playoff beards, the occasional scrap and some nifty goals don't hurt either. ;)
So lay it on me, fellas. I know as soon as I see the BIG RED MACHINE again I'll remember why I love them so much- because I do love the Wings, even if they are not my old time Wings. They still have Osgood, who I never gave up on, even though he was pretty rough this year (who's been playing all the playoff games? Not Conklin!) will always be my boy.
I guess what this ramble is about is that I am cheering for the Wings officially, but I would not be heartbroken if the Blackhawks won, because i greatly enjoy the city of Chicago and the team, and it would be wonderful for them to get a Cup back there after a very long absence. As long as it isn't Pittsburgh or Carolina, I'm good, because I have no love for any team which has a Staal playing for it. ;)
perhaps some thought on the East later.

Winter Classic II
Wow that was fun.
Possibly not as much fun as any of you had in Buffalo last year but this was a great game in a really neat venue and it was a wonderful time. It was very cold but we didn't get any snow. The game was well played- lots of scoring and lots of scrapping and just general dislike on the part of both teams. It was everything an original 6 rivalry should be. Lots of Red Wings fans, of course tons of the hometown Blackhawks fans- they are great!- and just a fantastic atmosphere. And everywhere I looked were Patrick Kane jerseys.. hehe I always enjoy Kaner since he's from Buffalo and all.
It was just so cool. There was a whole plaza set up outside the ballpark with live music, photo ops, food, drink, free giveaways and facepainting going on. And throughout the whole thing were people walking around taking pictures. Those should be up on this website soon and I'll share them with you..
I have tons of pics, and some videos too that I will be uploading at some point in the next few days.. Just wanted to tell y'all that I am alive and well after today's game.
Oh and I was interviewed by a guy who writes for the Sports and Leisure magazine.. I was wearing a Sabres hat with my Steve Yzerman Team Canada jersey and I got a few comments. So this dude asked about the hat and when I told him I was from Buffalo he asked to interview me.. pretty cool, eh? I will let y'all know when it hits the press. I also had my pic taken for the Wings website... don't know if it made it there either.
Life is good. Still chillin in Chicago until Saturday so I doubt I'll post again before I get back to Buffalo. I hope everyone had a great New Year's eve/day celebration..
And it looks like the Sabres got things started off right today with a 4-1 win. Roy and Pommer each had 2 goals? That's pretty great, really. I guess Lindy's comments after Tuesday night sparked something? Probably not. It is the Leafs after all. ANyway I'll take it as a good sign that they are finally going to start playing well and just leave it at that. (until the next game.)
I am desperately tired so it's bedtime for me. Goodnight!

Watching the game with my sisters and bro- this is great! GO WINGS!

The dudes in the Dockers commercials are kinda hot.
By the way, that hit from Hal Gill on Holmy in game 3 was pretty ugly. The contact wasn't the issue, but Gill took his stick and upended Holmstrom and that was NOT necessary.
Eww Pittsburgh scored 3 mins into the game. Oh well, there is plenty of time.
I would like the Wings to win tonight so they can have the 3-1 lead, then let the Pens have #5 so we can have 6 games and 'Nee can see one.

I think I've ranted about this before, but why does the NHL seem to think that the people watching games are old men?! I am SO tired of the cialis, viagara (on CBC) and flomax. Yo- I don't need or want to hear about all that crap! Whatever happened t the old days of beer and Dodge commercials? That's good enough for me. OOh look an amp energy commercial. YAY Ryan Miller! :)
Mike Babcock is creepy looking. He's got those beady eyes, kinda like a bird of prey or something. There's an idea for a hockey SAB... hmmmm. WOW 17 Penguins are under 30- 14 Red Wings are over 30. that's a bit of an age gap. (There are 20 Sabres under 30. We Win!)

WHAT is Don CHerry wearing?
Watching on CBC tonight- I can't take the VS crew (even if it is on nbc or wherever.)
OH MY WORD that has the be the worst suit I have EVER seen! It literally hurts my eyes. yeeesh. And then there is Ron McLean who actually looks like a person. Whoa. THey showerd Zetterberg and I was like ahhhhhh he's SO LOVELY and then they cut to Grapes and my eyes just started to bleed!
He is such a windbag. I'm so tired of listening to Cherry blab about whatever. He is better than the VS loons but only because he actullay talks about hockey. He's still a bit of a buffoon.
Oh and just to note, Canadian SUBWAY commercials are weird!
THen again, I may have to check out the NBC broadcast just to compare. Just switched-that Love Guru movie looks stupid.
Oh yeah and Pittsburgh (finally) scored! It was a good goal, and Detroit just gave away the puck with the missed pass. BUt Osgood did have some bustin saves right there at the end. This may be a good game!
The Pens are flying early in the 2nd period. Oh Puke, Cros scored on a PP. That was a bullshit penalty, by the way. Osgood didn't have a chance on that one, Sid was sneakily posted right beside the net.

Hellllo Trevor Linden- he is lookin fine! Dear sweet Trevor Linden was my first Captain- from the Canucks of 1994, my first hockey team love. Haven't seen 'im in a while and I like what I see. That is a mad hot jacket too.
I am completely loving the Hockey Hall of Fame commercials. So amazing!!
3rd period--- ooooh Malts and Cros mixing it up a bit. Don't even pretend Sid. Malts is so out of your league in scrappiness. Hoooooo good job Ozzie! nice grab on the line! Argh now it's 3-1 pitt. Missed the goal since I was doing laundry.
Woooo then the WIngs scored! We have a game after all. BUt it's actually okay if Pittsburgh wins because we need at least 6 games for 'Nee to be able to see a game (She thinks she'll be home Tuesday!!!!) so she can see some Red Wings hockey then!! It's all going according to plan.
Hmm Ray SHero looks like a cross between Jagr and Lemieux. Oh man after the Malkin call Michel looked like he had some mad indigestion going on. Poor guy. I'm sorry they keep saying your name wrong, homey. I FEEL YA!!!
So Pittsburgh gets the win. Just like we planned. It's okay Wings, y'all played well so there is nothing to be ashamed of. It's all good.
Now I need a shower and some sleep. Catch y'all on the flipside.

The Great Oz has spoken
YAY Osgood got another shutout. He's SO the man. The Pens are getting owned all over the ice and I LOOOOVE it!
After reading all that blahblah about how they are the next Oilers dynasty (Hello, don't you have to win a coupla Cups to start being thought of as a dynasty?) on NHL.com today it was kinda nice to see that.
Oooh wee were those some sweet goals. I love the Wings. They just get it done. Who thinks they are boring? Their transition game is one of the best in the league, they are fast and furious and have some sick moves. They can hit, they can score, their goalie is a beast. They are just awesome. (they are evertying Pittsburgh should be but somehow isn't doing)
I think the Pens were more organized tonight but they could not get past OSGOOD because he is the man. Last time a goalie started the finals with 2 shutouts? I believe it was Marty Brodeur in 2003 on his way to Cup #3 with the Devils. :):) GOOD JOB OZZIE!
Oh and this has been bothering me, but I could swear that Chris Osgood doesn't have any eyebrows. I watched his interview tonight and every time I see him it's like there is something strage going on with his face (besides the fact that he still looks like he's 12 LOL) and I finally realized it- if he does have eyebrows, they are so light that you can't see 'em. But I was looking hard and could not tell. Then I remembered about a teacher I had in high school who had this weird condition where the hair on his body (except his head) started falling out- he had no eyelashes or eyebrows. We didn't notice till he pointed it out because he had blonde hair anyway but then it was SO STRANGE. So now I'm wondering about Ozzie. I must research.
But I also need some sleep. I had a busy day and I've got to be up early tomorrow so peace out homies.

yay I stole the laptop so I can blog and watch the game at the same time. Wheee!
Pre-game thoughts:
-I can't believe the Wings and Pens did not play even ONCE all year. WTF is up with that?
-I loooooved that Mario and Stevie did the ceremonial puck drop. I almost cried. I love Stevie so much. and he looked SOOOO tiny next to Mario. Weird. which means that either Mario is HUGE or Stevie is tiny or both. LOL
-I also enjoy that Messier is in the studio. he may have captained the Rangers to the theft of Stanley in my first hockey season but I dunno, he's just great. I can't seem to hate him. so woo.
-WHY do the announcers have to yell all thetime? Guys, we can hear you, I promise.
-Crosby looked totally annoyed that Chris Simpson was harassing him right before faceoff. I would be too. Totally rude.
-What is up with Lidstrom's 'C' being on the right side? It goes on the left, over the heart. That makes no sense! Somebody help answer this question..
First Period:
The Wings are taking a lot of penalties. How strange.

I can't believe that goal was disallowed. Seriously that was a dumb penalty. Grrrrr at that. Fleury was NOT in the crease. That means he was fair game!
Oh and has anyone noticed that Draper has been the Dockers player of the game for about 20938495 games now? It's weird cuz they act like it's something new every time. no clue about that. but in case you didn't know, Kris Draper likes golf. and wearing jeans and t-shirts.
Oh and can they PLEASE stop taking to the players in the middle of the game? that is so distracting and annoying. Why do they do that?
Intermission:
not much to talk about. I read in the Hockey NEws that the NHL is not advocating playoff beards- because they think that ad agencies won't want pictures of scruffy players. WTF yo? Have they ever watched playoff hockey? A full, bustin beard (unless you're Sid, who can't grow one, or Ovie who sprouts overnight) means you have stood the test of several rounds. It's like a badge of honour. And it's mad tradition. I think it's absurd.
Honestly, I don't know why no one has told Brian Engblom that the mullet has to go? It's horrid. Worse than horrid. You think I would get used to it but I just can't seem to. Yeugh.
Second period:
Some good chances. Pittsburgh doesn't have much defence.
I like the crowd. Good ole hockeytown!
Sweet action Detroit scores!!! wraparound even. That was solid. and Fleury was sllooooow on the uptake there. WOOOOHOOOOOOOO!
They have been better than usual about the constant Crosby reminders. That's refreshing.
Fleury has had some nice stops since the goal.

P.S. Babcock is no Lindy Ruff, but he is kinda being pissy at the press conference. He was mad about that call on the disallowed goal, "you're trying to set me up. His stick was in the crease? Is that against the rules? Did they change it when I wasn't watching?" but that's not as good as Lindy's "Wake up, geezus, Wake UP!". ANd Babcock has a weird voice.

Can Stanley come out to play?
Ahh it's that time! It FINALLY feels like Spring in Buffalo and it is also (at long last) time for the FINALS! :) And even though it's not our beloved Sabres, the Red Wings are playing for Lord Stanley, and I have been a Red Wings fan since I've been a hockey fan. (14 years now) so I think it's okay for me to get excited about the idea of them winning! They are not my #1 team- truth be told, they never were #1- that honor belonged to whichever team Pavel Bure was playing for because he's my main man- but they have always been my 'other' team. We have endured some really lame times along the way, the Wings and I, with some poor showings and early round exits, and of course the loss to the Devils in 95 (which started a slow burning passion for Marty Brodeur that took some years to flower itself..) and then we got to feel the GLORY of Winning- in 1997, ending the drought of the half-century, and see Stevie Y lift the Grail over his head. Ahh that was magic. Then I was IN Detroit a couple of weeks later, to see the banners everywhere, and the statues wearing Red Wings jerseys, it was SO COOL!
Then we got to do it again in 1998. And 2002.
But now it's 2008 and there are a whole new corps of Wings who haven't tasted Stanley's champagne yet. It's their turn. And I'm cheering for them!
I actually don't really have anything against Pittsburgh. I prefer the Wings but if the Pens win, I won't be too upset. At least it's not the Rangers or the Flyers, thank heavens.
Looking at it from a talent/stats point of view, I think the Wings have the better deal. If I was a Pens fan, I'd be worried about Fleury's ability to stand up to the Wings offence. He has been VERY good thus far, but the Penguins have not been tested by a true offensive juggernaut. It will be interesting. I also think Detroit has better defence. They are going to have their hands full with Sid, Geno and Hossa for sure, but I think that they are up to the task. And Osgood knows what it takes and he is ready. :)
This should be an exciting series. I'm looking forward to it. But I think Wings in 6. 7 would be even cooler.

YAY!
And the Wings are victorious! Dallas gave them a good run for the money, but Detroit is just unstoppable!
It should be a fun final- Detroit and Pittsburgh. I think Detriot will win- Pit doesn't have the defence to stand up to the Wings' constant onslaught. But we may see some seriously high scoring games, which would be fun. (Now, I don't mind a goaltending duel either, I just like hockey!!) I want this series to go the full 7 games- it would make hockey go as long as possible (though geez, but the finals are early this year!) AND if it goes to 7, then my sis Renee' will get to see game 7 (and maybe 6, it just depeneds on when she gets home) so that would be grand. Plus, I like the Wings and I want them to win, but it's not really a do or die thing for me so 7 will be slightly stressful but it won't be crazy. ;)

Today is my niece's college graduation. Woohoo for her! :)

That was fun
I only caught the 3rd period of tonights game (I know, I know but life gets in the way of hockey sometimes!)
But yay for the Wings. It was a pretty solid effort all around. Woohoo Osgood with the 7 starts= 7 wins! :)
Dallas looked a little lost, but I'm sorry, I'm just not buying the whole "well they played 4 overtimes on SUNDAY" line. Yes, they did play that long, but that was 4 days ago if they aren't over it by now, they need to get into better shape or something. It's not a good excuse. (I don't think the Stars were trying to excuse themselves in this way, but I did hear our friend Edzo say something like that.. no way dude. no way)
Other than that, I'm out of hockey news. I do have some interesting search terms. I'm sure I'll do a blog on it again soon, those are always fun filler. And I have been visited by folks in the USA, Canada, Japan, England, Sweden, and South Korea. Neato and hello to all of you! I have some new states that came up too, but that will all be revealed in good time.
For now it's back to my literary pursuit of the moment, Guy Gavriel Kay's Sailing to Sarantium.
