So a comment on my sister's fb wall got a little out of hand the other day.. and it was my fault. We were quoting Han Solo, and I said "hoCkey religions and ancient weapons are no match for a good blaster at your side, kid."... and didn't even realize, till later, that I said hockey and not hokey. WHOOPS!
However, it led to some silly comparisons of NHL-folks to SW folks.. and since I am both a Star Wars nerd and a hockey (Sabres) fan, I thought I should take it one step further and start assigning some characters. It's a work in progress, and if you think of any other fellas from around the League, feel free to contribute. (or if you're a fan of another team and want to give me YOUR version, once again, feel free to comment here or e-mail me. )
C-3PO- so worried about doing everything correctly that he can't think straight and so messes things up- Thomas Vanek
R2-D2- the brains of the operation- Ryan Miller
Princess Leia- They are all boys, I can't do that!
Darth Vader- The big baddie- he takes no prisoners- Lindy Ruff
Random Rebel Fighter who dies in the first scene- Jochen Hecht (alas, we hardly knew ye!)
Jawas- take all sorts of junk and make it work- Matt Ellis
Tuscan Raiders-nasty bad guys- The Philadelphia Flyers
Uncle Owen- barely even qualifies as a character because he's only on screen for a few minutes, but has a purpose in the plot- Any of the 1 or 2-game Amerks call-ups
Luke Skywalker- kid with a DESTINY and a famous name, but turns out to be pretty dargonne badass- Marcus Foligno
Old Obi-Wan Kenobi- crusty old Jedi Master who is still awesome- Teppo Numminen
Han Solo- the most brilliant captain in the universe with the best ship- Ted Black (he did restore hot water to the restrooms! and set up blogger summits. He's pretty great)
Chewbacca- fiercely loyal to his buddies, big and strong- Tyler Myers
Greedo- the bounty hunter who's too slow on the draw- (anyone who faces off against Goose)
Random Cantina Patron with 2 seconds of screen time- Mike Weber
Grand Moff Tarkin- The only one who can call Vader to heel- Darcy Regier
Wedge Antilles- The guy who is always there on your wing when you need him- Jason Pominville

Emperor Palpatine- The one who is really running the show- Terry Pegula
Snow Monster- nearly destroyed the hope of the future- Milan Lucic
Dak- one of the revolving door of Luke's wingmen- Corey Tropp
Rogue 2- the guy who finds and rescues Luke when he's lost in the snow- Tyler Ennis

Lando Calrissian- Kinda slimy but usually a good guy- when it works for him- Drew Stafford
Denziens of Jabba's Palace- a disgusting mix of the universe's worst thugs- Boston Bruins
Nien Nubb- random co-pilot who shows up at the most important time- Alexander Sulzer
Wicket- the cute furry awesome little guy- Nathan Gerbe
Storm Troopers- the guys who do Vader's dirty work for him- Patrick Kaleta and Cody McCormick
--------------
And just to have enough characters for all the players, I'll get into the new movies too, even though I find them to be not NEARLY as good.
Teenage Anakin-lots of potential, lacks some discipline- Andrej Sekera
Qui-Gon Jinn- good but not around long enough to make much difference- Cody Hodgson
Young Obi-Wan Kenobi- smart, powerful, will go far- Christian Ehrhoff
Jango Fett- smart guy but operates behind the scenes- Jordan Leopold
Mace Windu - good but not quite good enough for top billing- Jonas Enroth
---------------
And there ya have it. The Sabres, complete with Coaches, GM, Owner, President and some rivals. What do you think? Ready to set it up for your team? :)

Absurd
I am watching the All-Star Fantasy Draft and it's HYSTERICAL! (and hot. Can't deny the hotness factor- they are all wearing suits and have their hair combed and yeah...sorry, I'm a hormonal female, what do you want!?)
Some points:
-Let's talk about the Captains- Gotta love Listrom, he's always classy. Marty St. Louis is cute and little and Patrick Kane is a DORK.
-Eric Staal looks constipated or like he has a headache, Ryan Kesler owns my heart and Mike Green is a lamer.
-I still (don't judge) think Eric Staal is kinda cute. (even if he makes weird faces)
-Team Staal OWNS!
-Whoa splitting up the Sedins! WHOOOAAA. And how awkward did Kes look after he introduced Daniel? Hahaha
-Dude. Shea Weber is Nashville's HIGHEST scorer with 30 pts? And they still got a pic but Buffalo didn't? GRR.
-Yay Thunder Bay Boys- called that one- welcome Sharpie!
-"I'm gonna go with my boy_____"
-'Hawks reunion over here with Byf.
-Toews totally looks like he's going to cry! LOL @ him and Kaner
-Yay Jeff Skinner- he's cute in a dorky little kind of way.
-Team Staal def. wins in hot goalie points.
-David Backes is gross (and wearing an ugly suit) but he's funny.
-Ooh Lidstrom just earned a hotness point with Richards.
-More hotness on the scene with Letang.
-It's killing me that Royzie isn't here. :(
-Speaking of, once again, HOW IS IT FAIR that there are no Sabres, Islanders or Panthers in this game? RUDE! (I bet if Royzie hadn't gotten hurt he'd be in but still... Vanek is pretty legit.)
-Havlat add some hotness to Lidstrom- plus he has the red beard thing going on.
-Ditto that for Kopitar (minus the beard).
-Ooh Tazer is so the whipping boy for tonight's festivities! Poor guy. He's taking it well, though.
-But at least our Sabre Rookie Tyler Ennis is on the right team- Team Staal! Yay for Ennis the Menace!
-I'm sorry, but the DEVILS (who I love still but are atrocious this year) have an All-Stall but not the Sabres? BULLLLLLLSHHHHIIIIITTTT!
-The numbers on the jerseys are cool looking!
-EWWWWWW Phil Kessel is so nasty I'm glad he's still hanging at the end.
-LOL Duchene is SO AWKWARD- it's very funny.
-Loui what is up with your hair dude? He used to be hot but now I dunno.
-Eric Staal wins- because he picked Statsny over Kessel== wooohooo!
-It would suck so much to be the last person picked!
-Whoa wait a minute- the last guy gets a car? That's lame. Whatevs.
-I have to wonder if they had jerseys made for everybody in both colors because they didn't know who was going to be picked when..
In conclusion, Team Staal FTW- they got all the right guys and they have to win! :)
I love All-Star Weekend. It's silly and fun and so much awesome facetime with the boyos. :)

Busyness
I drove a long time today but I am now home. Woo.
The Sabres lost (again, go figure) to the Senators of DOOOM. GRR. At least they beat the Blues tonight. I heard the last few minutes.. all I was able to manage on the drive since WGR doesn't like to broadcast out too far. (Riddle me this: I was able to pick up the signal from OTTAWA a couple of years ago, but I can't get it in Bradford, PA? Nonsense!)
In a few days, I'm going to Chicago for a New Year's Eve Blackhawks/Devils game. It shall be most excellent and I'm super excited. Trying to think of some clever signage to catch Sharpie's eye.. hmmmm...
Speaking of my BlackhawksBoyfriend, today is his Birthday. Welcome to being 28, Sharpie! It's been good to me so far, hopefully 28 is a good year for you too. :)

I figured it out
Guys, I know why Derek Roy isn't scoring goals:
it's MY fault!
See, when I got my Roy jersey for Christmas, almost 2 years ago, the Sabres had that pathetic 10 game winless streak, and Royzie didn't score a single goal in that stretch. Before that, he was the team's leading scorer- pts AND goals.
Then he finally broke out of that slump (and the injury that happened during it) and scored a hat trick in that bust-up of Atlanta and actually did very well for the rest of the season. That was the time when Royzie and Pommer were in the Top 5 goal scorers for the 2nd half of the year. Ah, memories.
Flash forward to this summer. I met Derek Roy in August and had him autograph my jersey. He hasn't scored a goal since.
I think I even joked that I hoped it didn't curse him, and here we are, 10 games into the season and Roy has 8 assists and ZERO goals.
I blame myself. Apparently my fandom is dooming my boy. I shall have to renounce all Derek Roy love until such time as he finds his scoring touch again.
I'm quite sorry to have deprived the Sabres of a top scoring threat, but I am quite happy that the rest of the boys have stepped up. So, from now until he gets his act together, I shall try to treat Derek as "just one of the boys" and give him no more notice than I would.. say, Steve Montador.
Derek, you're on notice.

Dave's a killer
Man, sometimes I get a little post-happy.. this seems to be one of those times.
So, we're tied with the icky Hurricanes in points. And according to NHL.com, we are in the 8 spot.. but that's incorrect. We are tied with Carolina in points, but they have more wins *tiebreaker* thus they should have the 8-spot. Although maybe because we have a game in hand? I dunno but if the playoffs were today, the Sabres would be out. :(
All that being said, last night was a decent game. The only real issue I had was that the boys could NOT find the back of the net. That was pretty frustrating (more for them than for me I'm sure). Yeeeesh. major kudos to Patty Lalime for busting his butt last night and keeping us in it. He was better on the rebound control last night, which I think is his weakest point. Once he is back to 100%, and if the fellas keep playing in front of him like they did last night- if we can manage to score some goals, then there is a definite chance the Sabres are in the playoffs. Certainly all is not lost.
In the west, the Blue Jackets are moving up- currently chillin in the 5th spot, I Believe with a few points between them and the next team down. WOOHOOO! :):)
And now for a few public announcements:

-Hey, it worked for Ryan Miller!

-YOU can help! This is like the Amber alert system for Pommer's game..

I'm a blogging fiend!
Read the last 3 or 4 posts if you feel like it.. I've been a little spazzy on the posting here in the last day or 2 but I seem to (suddenly) have a lot to say!
So, Buffalonians, take heart! Remember last year when we were having that (I shudder to remember that) 10 game losing streak.. and then the bustin win over Atlanta (ha) then the immediate return to crappy hockey. Well.. the real turning point for the 2nd half of last season (and Roy's personal season) was the game against Dallas- when Royzie had 2 goals and the boys won a hard-fought, nasty game in Dallas. I would love to see that happen again tonight. Heck, we could blow them out of the water if we want, I just want to see some good, hard-hitting, playing like WE CARE ABOUT WHETHER WE WIN OR LOSE hockey. Is that too much to ask for? Sometimes, with the Sabres, it is. I hope they decide to show up tonight.
and I say again, to the team that has scored 3 goals in 3 gameson behalf of Ryan Miller:

the end.

new and improved
Good. That nasty biting punk Ruutu got 2 games and a nice fine for his antics last night. As it should be. I think that's a reasonable punishment. Plus he's on Petey's shit-list and the laughingstock of the sports world right now. Sucks to be him. (I think it would suck to be him anyway because he seems like quite the loser but still..)
Yay I finally found a Separated at Birth.. after a short (er... 3 week?) hiatus for the Holidays, etc, everyone's favorite FFITB Feature: Hockey SAB is back! (you know you missed it dearly.)
Oh and in my absence, my good friend Rachael did a few of her own on her Sticks-n-Stilettos blog if you want to check them out. I think they are pretty clever. :)
So yeah.. this one is a bit on the crazy side. Today's Separated at Birth requires a little reaching.. Imagine if Scott Wolf

And Bill Murray

had a love child. Yeah, weird, I know. Stay with me here. Don't you think it would look like this...

That's Vernon Fiddler of the Predators. He used to play in the ECHL but he played for a team I didn't care about so I'm never excited to see him in the NHL *unlike my boy Sloaner* in anything other than a "cool, I saw him play in the minors. I think he scored a hat trick on my team a time or 2." sort of way. LOL did that make sense?
But seriously, tell me I'm wrong about that. At first I was thinking just Bill Murray but then I realized there was something else there too... wild stuff, eh? Maybe I need some sleep. LOL

Decisions, Decisions
I need advice.
My fantasy hockey team needs a name. I'm playing in a league with the Ookies and other folks from their brilliant realm of the blogosphere. It looks pretty cutthroat and I'm excited. It's crazy though, because you have to draft entirely out of the conf. OPPOSITE your favorite team. i.e., since I'm a Sabres fan, I have to pick guys from the Western Conference. Cool.
but I need a name. My 2 past forays into fantasy hockey have been named the RedRogues. It was a random moniker I came up with, sometime to do with the Red Wings and Star Wars Rogue squadron and it just sounded cool. But I think the RedRogues will already be in another league with some folks I played with last year.
So.. how can I sound cool? Should it be:
Face First Into the Boards? (that's where I'm sending everyone!)
Burying the Biscuit (I can haz goals?)
Look at Me, I'm Rick Nash! *only if I can draft him*
Or something else? (Suggestions welcome)
The draft is on Sept. 19 so I need to be ready by then. Help a sista out!

this one's a doozie
Oh boy, here we go again. It's still Wednesday (seriously, I haven't gone to bed yet so I don't care what the clock says..) so I'm not too much of a slacker.
I had a super hard time coming up with tonight's gem. I searched player after player looking for a familiar mug. I randomly called pictures of actors and hockey players and tried to mix and match but to no avail.
Then I hit upon a blast from the past. Here we have a rather silly but also rather compelling Separated at Birth.

I present you with Hobey Baker- the first great American hockey player (and also the only member of both the Hockey Hall of Fame and College Football Hall of Fame) He has a really interesting story, you should read about him.
AND

A "Ken" doll. This guy is purported to be the first one. Striking resemblance, non? Maybe Ken was made to look like Hobey. He was pretty dreamy. ;)
And there ya have it. This is what happens when I leave the weekly SAB until 1:30 AM.
I'm going to bed. Later peeps.

special SAB
Wow, it's wednesday again. They keep creeping up on me.
And since I'm feeling lazy tonight, and my birthday was yesterday, we'll do a special Edition of Hockey Separated at Birth.
Once, suffering from a bout of insomnia/procrastination in my college days, I busted out my giant book o'hockey and searched the pages of every player to play a game in the NHL from the beginning to 2000. I marked the ones that I share a birthday with. There were not many, and perhaps there are a few more since 2000, but here is what I have:
-Henri Lehvonen b. Sarnia Ont, 8/26/50 Played 4 games for the Kansas City Scouts in 1974-75
-Steve Carlson b. Virginia, MN 8/26/55 Played 52 games for the LA Kings in 1979-80
-Chris McRae (brother of Basil) b. Beaverton ONT, 8/26/65 Played 14 games for the Maple Leafs in 1987-89 and 7 for the Red Wings in 1989-90
-Igor Nukulin b. Cherepovets, USSR, 8/26/72 Played 1 playoff game for the Ducks in 1996-97
Ron Stackhouse b. Haliburton, ONT 8/26/1949Played 889 NHL games for California Golden Seals, Red Wings, and Penguins from 1971-1982
Bill White- b. Toronto ONT, 8/26/39 Played 604 NHL games for the LA Kings and Chicago Blackhawks from 1967-77
Bob Dupuis b. 8/26/52 North Bay, ONT (my mom's maiden name is Dupuis and I had some waaaay back Dupuis ancestors who lived in NS, maybe we're related!) Played 1 game as a goalie for Edmonton in 1979-80
And that, to my knowledge and painstaking research, is a list of anyone who played in the NHL through 2000 who shares my birthday. While August is an extremely popular birthmonth among hockey folks, the 26th is not. On the contrary, I once found 3 guys on the Anaheim Ducks who shared my friend Joy's bday (nov. 2), and one of them was the same year!
I know, I'm a weirdo. But it's fun!

little bit o'this and that
We have SABRENEWS! :) Yesterday the blue and gold re-signed Danny Paille to a 2-year contract. Well done, fellas, well done. :) I like Mr. Pie-YAY and I'm happy that he'll be back. He was one of the few bright spots in a rather dismal second half last season. and it seemed like the worse everybody else was, the better he responded. And he's still quite young so he should only get better. YAY!
AND the nhl released the schedule for the upcoming season today. The Sabres open on October 10 against the Canadiens. Oooh I want to go- not like that will happen but maybe somebody will come with me to the Party in the Plaza?!
Also, HeatherB pointed out this little challenge going on at sportsquee- name your Top 10 Squee-worthy NHL-ers. Here's the lowdown- To promote and further the intellectual discourse concerning hot bitches in the NHL, in response to this post by SportSquee's favorite 25 year-old Hawaiian organ donor, McBloggin himself, Greg Wyshynski, we asked our faithful readers to submit their personal list of Top Ten Hottest Hockey Players for public consumption and possible humiliation. The rules are that the players are on regular NHL duty, and a reason is given for why the number one is the number one. * I have a small disclaimer for my list. My numero uno for all time is Pavel Bure. No other hockey player can even compare. Sadly, he is not an active player, as he was forced to retire (at the ripe old age of 34) 3 years ago due to re-curring injuries. He still holds the #1 spot in goal scoring, looks, skill and anything else that anyone could judge a hockey player on (goalies are the exception) but as he is ineligible for this list, I will have to be brave and move on. I will do my best.*
So here is my list. (with explanations)
1. Derek Roy- (BUFFALO) Yes, I know- how cliche', a Sabres fan thinking Derek Roy is hot. Well, sorry, he IS! LOL He's a total pretty-boy.. but he's not always a pretty boy. He can get down and dirty when he wants to (I'm talking on the ice, people, get your minds out of the gutter!!) He's turning into a real goal scorer, but is getting better defensively as well so he's a pretty great player. ANd he just makes me swoon. He's got that animal magnetism or something. I dunno but I'd jump his bones.
2. Ray Whitney-(CAROLINA) He is older than me! Big points there. He just has that clean-cut hotness about him that is undeniable. ANd he seems like a decent human being from what I've read. I've liked him since he played in Florida with Bure and was actually happy that he (and Brett Hedican) won the Cup, even if it was for Carolina. I briefly met Ray at a pre-season game back in 2000, and he was really cool. And smokin hot.
3. Chris Osgood- (DETROIT) Ahh, I have liked Osgood for many a year. He still has his boyish good looks of when he first joined the league back in 1994! He's a great (underrated) goalie and even if he's more 'cute' than HOT, he still makes the cut because I love him.
4. Jarome Iglina (CALGARY)- Jarome has the most beautiful skin I've ever seen. ANd his smile lights up the world. He's beautiful and also seems like a genuine and decent human being. That's always worth big points with me!
5. Henrik Zetterberg- (DETROIT) Oh Z. he's got it all- the scoring touch, the big body that he's not afraid to throw around, the sexy accent, long hair, short hair,- the sexiest playoff beard I've seen in ages- oh and a Stanley CUp and Conn Smythe trophy too. Damn, sign me up! And he's got that gap-toothed smile which only adds to the rough-and touble appearance with the beard and the hair and it makes me melt.
6. Antoine Vermette (OTTAWA) He's pretty much the only good thing about the Sens. This man is gorgeous. He's got those dark good looks and if you ever wondered what he wears under the jersey- Wonder No more. Along with that photo is a really sweet article which proves that he is a really great person too. Aww.
7. Rusty Klesla- (COLUMBUS) I've also met Rusty, a few years back in Columbus for a 4th of July parade the blue jackets were doing. (I met Rick Nash too, before he ever played a game) Rusty was being coy and pretending he didn't understand English- when it suited his purposes (like when they ttold the guys to stop throwing candy LOL) anyway he's got an adorable smile and gorgeous eyes.
8. Willie Mitchell- (VANCOUVER) I know zip about this guy (that's what happens when you never play anyone in the west!) but he is SMOKIN and that is enough. He's just pretty. (I have heard that he's a good player, but that isn't really the issue here, is it? LOL)
9. David Clarkson- (NEW JERSEY)- I don't know much about Clarkson either, except that he plays for the Devils (big points there!) and that he's teh hotness. He was pointed out to me during the All-Star festivities by the folks at IPB and they were right- he's quite lovely and that's all you really need to know. He seems to be a bit of a badass, always a good quality as well.
10. Jose Theodore (COLORADO)- Ew, I hate the Avs but I like Jose. He's got lovely hair and extremely intense eyes. He looks creepyhot behind the goalie mask and GQhot in a suit and tie. I like it all.
BONUS: Hottest Minor Leaguers-
I've met (and gotten to know) quite a few minor league hockey players so I'll include a special segment for the AHL and ECHL just for fun.
Hottest Man in the AHL- Tyler Sloan (HERSHEY) *look him up* Sloaner has really pretty blue eyes, a great smile and an amazing accent (he's from Calgary) He's tall and broad-shouldered and looks really good in a pair of dress slacks, I must say. ;) He also wears glasses sometimes, which is HOT! Oh and he's a really nice guy.
Hottest Man in the ECHL- Travis Rycroft (UTAH) You've already seen pictures of him so you know I'm not making it up. He's dreamy. And Oh.MY.GOSH I saw him one day wearing nothing but tight tight tight hockey underwear and then he wanted to have a conversation with me and I was like guh..uh.. right. If you catch my drift. It was pretty fine. He's great. Just an all around great (and damn great looking) guy.
So there you have it.
And today's shoutout- *it's kind of a sporadic thing I guess* goes to Pentiction, BC- (which is the home of Travis Rycroft) Since Rykes gets more searches than even Derek Roy and Derek Roy girlfriend, and the visitors from Pentiction spend more time than anyone else (avg of 8 mintues per visit) on the site, they deserve some recognition. So hello, way over there! ;)
And I think that about wraps it up. For now.

a little draft silliness- HeatherB style-
So the brilliant and talented Heather B made up a little draft profile for herself. It was cute and funny and I decided to copy her and make my own. Feel free to steal it and add one for yourself. :)

Yes, that really IS me, and no, it's not a doctored photo. It was one of my senior pictures, from 1999. You may now laugh. ;)
Sam
Right Wing
Shoots: Right
Born: Baton Rouge, LA, August 26, 1981
Hometown: Dayton, OH
Sam's favorite birthday present was a pair of hockey skates when she turned 15.
She has never played an organized sport. Ever.
Her first hockey game was March 17, 1995, at JOE LOUIS ARENA. She was wearing a Canucks jersey and cheering for Vancouver. The Red Wings won.
Likes to skate backwards but is more interested in goal-scoring.
Enjoys dipsy-doodling with the puck but isn't so good with the shooting, as she has zero accuracy.
Wears #10 in honor of her first and always hockey love- Pavel Bure: who, along with a boy her sister had a crush on- Lance Links- got her into hockey.
Used to amaze people with her mad gym floor hockey skillz.
Crowning moment of Basic Ice Hockey course in college was falling flat on her butt while doing her first line change over the boards. Still managed to get up and score a goal, after she stopped laughing.
If she could have dinner with any three people she would choose
Martin Broduer-he seems very articulate and funny;
Lord Stanley, Earl of Preston- why not? LOL
and....
Derek Roy. just because.
*Pavel is my favorite hockey player ever- followed by Royzie and Marty, but I couldn't ever talk to Pavel- I don't think I could handle it. I almost lost my mind when I watched him play hockey the first time. I'd probably turn into a little puddle of goo if I ever met him in real life. Marty and Royzie seem much more approachable.*
She likes many types of music but is proud to say she never fell for the New Kids on the Block hype. She did enjoy the Backstreet Boys for a short while, and 98 degrees as well. She even still listens to some of their music.
If she could be in any movie she'd be Princess Leia in The Empire Strikes Back. That is by far the best of the Star Wars movies.
FAVORITES
NHL TEAM: Buffalo Sabres- followed closely by the New Jersey Devils and the Detroit Red Wings with an ILOVEOHIO nod to the Columbus Blue Jackets
NHL PLAYER: Ever-Pavel Bure Current- Derek Roy/Martin Broduer

PRACTICE DRILL: backwards crossovers- I like to look at them more than I like to do them.
VIDEO GAME: erm. Base Wars for the Nintendo. or Tetris.
MOVIE: The Breakfast Club, Miracle
TV SHOW: Shark
ACTOR: Harrison Ford
GROUP: Our Lady Peace
WEBSITE: all my homies and the long-departed Hockey Snacks

ACTIVITY AWAY FROM THE RINK: reading, cooking, eating
TOY GROWING UP: my siblings. LOL We made up the most insane games
PLACE TO SHOP: bookstores, hockey stores, thrift stores
PLACE TO VISIT: South Louisiana, can't beat the fam and the food!
And there ya have it. Would YOU draft me? LOL
That was fun! Now it's bedtime.
